going up…

December 3, 2010

Today I went into mag nation in search of inspiration, and oh boy, there is plenty of inspiration to be had!

Good man Vali and his team of cool-yet-approachable types cleverly moved the food section upstairs, thus luring me into what I like to define as ‘exercise’. Having mastered the stairs to the second floor (stair master, I tell you) I was duly lured up a further flight by the whimsical scrawls of one Jeremyville.

On the third floor, there was still more of th’yarts to be had, with a lovely Curvy installation of fabric masquerading as wallpaper, shelves masquerading as walls and art, just being its gorgeous self.

Here are some poorly lit snaps I made for you:

This is what happens if you keep going inside yourself.

sometimes I feel like this.

then I tell myself this and sing a bit of hakuna matata.

Love this. Slight potter-porn vibe, but beautiful.

In between the artworks are mag nation’s usual Third Floor occupants: mags, mags and some of the best tees around, Jeremyville, Chunk, and this Frost* No.7 chain tee.

Fantastic Frost* bamboo fabric tee.

It is as we are constantly reminded, it’s almost Christmas.

As many of you may imagine, I’m not into consuming for consuming’s sake. I love mag nation for lots of reasons, but high on the list is their support of independant publishing, and print publishing in general. My current thought bubble on print publishing is somewhat conflicted and goes something like: using new shiny paper is bad/ using horrid chemicals is bad / education is good / 100% post recycled paper is good/ sharing information is good / reading is good / writing is good (oh, and my livelihood) / building communities is good / supporting arts is good…

So anyway, if you are thinking subscriptions this season, here are a few of my faves…

of course, the lovely Peppermint magazine (I am the Melbourne editor-at-large, but that doesn't diminish its awesomeness)

Gorgeous stories, inspiration and design. Responsibly printed, independent and well-loved.

all hail.

ahm. So Ani DiFranco says: 'I’m cradling the softest, warmest part of you in my hands / Feels like a little baby bird / Fallen from the nest'. Bloody good magazine - French and English text, detailing the latest and greatest in fashion and innovation the world over. Interesting covers usually including nudie element...

there are 90's bridesmaids crying into their fuschia dresses right now. meeemories.

One of the latest independant mags out of VIC, Spook is a delish mix of culture, fashion, art and music. Intelligent, unfluffy, awesome.

The moral of the story is, sometimes climbing stairs is ok. Sometimes.
